You sweep the patio Saturday morning and there they are again. Little cones of sand piled up between the pavers, like tiny volcanoes, with a hole in the middle of each one. Kick them flat and they're back by Tuesday. Ants have moved into your paver joints, and in Southwest Florida that's not a maybe, it's a when. Here's why they're there, why most of the things people try don't work, and the fix that actually ends it.
Why Ants Love Paver Joints
From an ant's point of view, a paver patio is luxury housing. The joints are filled with loose, dry, easy-digging sand. The pavers overhead are a solid roof that keeps rain out of the nest and holds warmth. The bedding sand underneath is an endless excavation site. And in our sandy Southwest Florida soil, the ground below is easy tunneling in every direction. Several species take advantage, from little black ants and big-headed ants to the fire ants nobody wants near a pool deck where kids run barefoot.
Those sand volcanoes you're sweeping up are spoil piles. Every grain came from your joints or the bedding layer under your pavers. That's the part people miss. The ants aren't just living between the pavers, they're mining the structure the pavers sit on.
The Damage Is Real, Not Just Annoying
- Empty joints: As sand gets excavated, joints go hollow. Open joints invite weeds, let storm water pump through, and stop doing their structural job of locking pavers together.

- More ants: A thriving colony spins off satellite nests. One volcano this spring is a dozen next spring.
What Doesn't Work (Ask Anyone Who's Tried)
- Spraying the volcanoes: Surface spray kills the workers you can see, which is a rounding error to the colony. The nest is deep and the queen never meets your spray. New volcanoes in a week.
- Boiling water, vinegar, cinnamon, the internet specials: Same problem. You're attacking the front porch of a structure that extends feet underground.
- Sweeping in more loose sand: You're delivering fresh building material. They'll mine it out again, and you've made the digging easier.
- Granular baits alone: Bait is genuinely useful and can knock out a colony, fire ants especially. But with loose sand joints, the habitat is still perfect, so the next colony moves into the vacancy. Bait treats the tenant, not the property.
The Fix: Take Away the Habitat
The lasting solution isn't chemistry, it's construction. You make the joints impossible to mine:
- Step one, clean out the joints: The old loose sand and ant workings get washed out with a proper pressure cleaning. This also evicts the current residents from the joint level.
- Step two, refill with polymeric sand: Polymeric sand looks like regular joint sand but contains a binder. Once it's swept in, compacted, and activated with water, it cures into a firm, flexible joint. Not concrete-hard, but hard enough that an ant can't excavate it grain by grain. No diggable sand, no nest, no volcanoes.
- Step three, seal the surface: Sealer locks the top of the joints, bonds the sand further, and sheds the water that would otherwise slowly soften and erode the joint edges. It also protects the polymeric investment from UV and storm scour so the joints stay intact for years instead of seasons.

What About the Colony Itself?
If you've got an active, heavy infestation, especially fire ants, it's worth baiting a week or two before the joint work so the colony collapses instead of relocating three feet over into your lawn or lanai border. For ordinary nuisance ants, sealing them out is usually enough on its own. They don't die dramatically, they just move somewhere easier to dig, which is the whole idea. And if pavers have already settled over mined-out voids, get the releveling done as part of the same project, before new sand and sealer go down, not after.
Will They Ever Come Back?
Honest answer: polymeric sand and sealer aren't immortal. After years of Florida sun and storms, joints wear at the edges and sealer thins, and opportunistic ants will find any joint that's opened back up. That's one of the quiet reasons resealing on a regular cycle matters. Each reseal tops up the joint sand and relocks the surface, resetting the clock on ants, weeds, and washout all at once. A surface that's maintained on schedule basically never gives ants a way back in.
