Regular joint sand

Polymeric sand
This is joint sand mixed with polymer binders. After you sweep it in and mist it with water, the binders activate and the sand hardens into a firm, semi-flexible joint. Makers like Techniseal build it specifically to resist washout, weeds, and ants. It costs more and is far less forgiving to install, but done right it holds the joints together much longer.
How Polymeric Sand Works
The polymers are the whole story. Dry, the sand behaves like any other joint sand. Once you mist it with the right amount of water, the binder cures and glues the grains into a solid mass that flexes a little instead of crumbling. That hardened joint is what keeps storm runoff from flushing the sand out and what makes it hard for weed seeds and ants to get a foothold. The Installation Mistakes That Ruin Polymeric Sand
Almost every polymeric sand horror story comes from one of these:
- Installing on a damp surface: Activates the binder early and leaves a haze stuck to the paver faces.
- Not sweeping the surface clean: Leftover sand on top of the pavers hardens into a film.
- Over-watering or under-watering the mist: Too much floods the binder out, too little leaves it powdery and weak.

Is polymeric sand worth the extra cost in Florida?

Does polymeric sand stop weeds completely?

Can you put polymeric sand over old regular sand?
